One of the most visually stunning horror films ever made is returning to the big screen.
Janus Films has unveiled the trailer for a brand-new 4K restoration of Masaki Kobayashi’s original three-hour cut of Kwaidan, which opens September 11 at New York’s Film Forum before expanding to theaters nationwide.
Released in 1964, Kwaidan is an extraordinarily beautiful anthology of four supernatural tales adapted from Lafcadio Hearn’s collections of Japanese folklore. Kobayashi created an almost dreamlike world through surreal sets, striking color and meticulously composed cinematography, resulting in ghost stories that remain deeply unsettling more than 60 years later.
The restored 183-minute original cut will play at Film Forum from September 11 through September 17, with a national rollout to follow.
