Outside of Sundance, SXSW and the Toronto International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest is probably the biggest festival for us hardcore genre fans.
Every year, the programmers somehow dig up a pile of brand-new horror and genre films that aren’t even on our radar yet, and suddenly they’re all we can talk about. This is a festival that has hosted premieres of everything from Smile and Split to Zombieland, Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, with last year’s Primate making its world premiere there before becoming a theatrical hit.
And the 2026 Fantastic Fest lineup looks as explosive as ever.
The festival will open with the World Premiere of Beware Boiúna, director Mike P. Nelson’s giant fucking snake movie starring Jessica Rothe and Kiana Madeira. Nelson returns to Fantastic Fest after bringing Silent Night, Deadly Night to the festival last year, and the new movie looks like an enormous, bloody Amazonian creature feature.
One of the biggest screenings, though, is Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil.
Cregger’s adaptation of the iconic survival horror video game franchise will receive a special gala screening at Fantastic Fest, just ahead of its September 18 theatrical release. This isn’t the festival opener, but it’s obviously going to be one of the hottest tickets of the week.
Fantastic Fest will then close with the World Premiere of The Swallow, the new survival horror film from Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, the filmmaking team behind the excellent Starry Eyes and 2019’s Pet Sematary. The film stars Grace Van Dien and follows a sentient, quicksand-like sludge that terrorizes a group of young people in what’s said to be a brutally efficient, effects-forward creature feature.
Also making its way to Austin is Zachary Wigon’s Victorian Psycho, starring Margaret Qualley and Thomasin McKenzie, which has been high on my list for a while now.
And on a very personal note, I couldn’t be more excited that Fantastic Fest will host the world premiere of our own The Heretiks.
Directed by Gregg Bishop (Dance of the Dead, SiREN) and written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (The Night House, Hellraiser), The Heretiks is a Halloween-set supernatural home invasion movie about a teenage girl who joins forces with a renegade witch to protect her younger sister from a murderous coven planning to use her in an apocalyptic ritual.
We’ve poured a whole lot of love into this new production from our company, Be Afraid Media, alongside Bleiberg Entertainment, which produced and financed the film. It’s our love letter to the kind of practical, Halloween-soaked ’80s horror that made us fall in love with this stuff in the first place.
I genuinely can’t wait to finally put it in front of a Fantastic Fest audience.
And that’s barely scratching the surface of this year’s lineup.
Fantastic Fest has become one of those rare festivals where half the fun is showing up for the movies you already know about, while the other half is discovering some completely fucking insane movie you’ve never heard of that everyone is talking about 24 hours later.
We’ll see you in Austin.
Here’s the full press release:
What’s that emerging from the shadows? Fantastic Fest’s 21st edition lineup is here, and ready to thrill, chill, and delight you. We are proud to present 35 World Premieres, 21 International and North American Premieres, and 14 U.S. Premieres featuring the very best in genre from across the globe, alongside our famous events and surprise guests. Join us to celebrate all things spooky at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX, from September 17th-24th, 2026.
“This year, we’re doubling down on what we do best: introducing the world to exciting new talent and helping launch filmmakers’ careers,” says Festival Director Lisa Dreyer. “We really focused our programming efforts on bringing new discoveries to our audience of discerning and passionate cinephiles. I guarantee we have the next batch of breakout Directors in our lineup, and you’ll discover them first at Fantastic Fest.”
“After the historic year genre cinema had at the box office, Alamo Drafthouse is proud to be a leader in the space,” says Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kusterman. “Because we have the most diverse film slate in all of exhibition, we are in a unique position to support these films from festival premiere to theatrical release, including our new Alamo Exclusives distribution model, giving the films that play Fantastic Fest a distinct advantage at reaching a nationwide audience.”
Opening the festival is the world premiere of Lionsgate’s Beware Boiúna, from Fantastic Fest alum Mike P. Nelson (Silent Night, Deadly Night). Equal parts terrifying and hiss-terical fun, this creature feature follows a group of medical volunteers whose adventure gets squeezed by Boiúna, “the mother of the waters,” the legendary giant snake that protects her domain. With a sssssstellar cast including Kiana Madeira, Jessica Rothe, and Logan Marshall-Green, Beware Boiúna has more twists than a coiled cobra and a tightly wound pace that will leave you choking for breath.

Fantastic Fest’s opening night will also include a gala screening of TriStar Pictures, Constantin Film, and Davis Films’ Resident Evil, the highly anticipated horror film from visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger.
Closing out the festival is The Swallow, a brutally efficient, effects-forward survival horror. When a group of teenagers break into a fenced-off area of the woods during a camping trip, they end up terrorized by a sentient, quicksand-like sludge. Directors Kevin Kölsch & Dennis Widmyer deliver a thrilling throwback horror film starring Grace Van Dien.
Fantastic Fest is thrilled to honor legendary Director Walter Hill with a special award for his incomparable contributions to genre film. A special screening of his neo-Western action thriller Extreme Prejudice will follow, along with a conversation with Hill. Following the festival, Alamo Drafthouse will present a special retrospective of his work nationwide in January.
