‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ Director Already Has Ideas for Another Sequel

Insidious: Out of the Further scared up a strong $25.3 million domestic opening this weekend, and director Jacob Chase is already thinking about where the franchise could go next.

During a Reddit AMA following the film’s release, Chase was asked directly whether the movie’s post-credits scene was setting the stage for Insidious 7.

“I have some ideas for the next one,” Chase teased. “We’ll see what happens!”

Interestingly, Chase also revealed that the post-credits sequence wasn’t originally conceived as a sequel tease at all. The scene was initially part of the movie proper, but Chase felt it distracted from the emotional payoff involving Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, so he moved it into the credits.

For those who didn’t stick around, here’s what happens: SPOILERS FOLLOW. After Gemma defeats Cyrus (Sam Spruell) and leaves him trapped in the Further, the demons he manipulated turn against him. Cyrus finds himself strapped into a dental chair, where KeyFace, the grotesque dentist entity encountered earlier in the movie, appears and begins drilling into his tooth. The scene leaves Cyrus very much stuck in the Further and, potentially, available for another round.

Chase explained in the AMA that he liked the scene enough that he didn’t want to lose it completely: “I’m glad you stayed for the post credit scene! There was a time that was in the body of the film but it ended up distracting from the emotional payoff with Gemma at the end so I moved it to the credits.” He added that he hopes more audiences stick around to see it.

Nothing has been officially announced regarding a seventh Insidious, but after six movies and more than $740 million worldwide before even opened, it’s difficult to imagine Sony and Blumhouse closing the Red Door anytime soon.
