Insidious: Out of the Further is officially haunting theaters, which means Sony is finally pulling back the curtain on some of the movie’s biggest surprises.
That includes Cyrus, the new central villain played by Sam Spruell, who has now been officially revealed by the studio. So, here he is in all his creepy glory.
Before the movie opened, franchise icon Lin Shaye told Entertainment Weekly that Spruell genuinely freaked her out when she first encountered him.
“[He] was truly scary,” Shaye said. “When I met him on the street, I had a visceral response.”
But what makes Cyrus particularly interesting within the Insidious universe is that he isn’t simply another silent monster lurking around The Further. He has a personality, something Shaye described as surprisingly funny and “very disarming.” She even compared his presence to one of horror’s greatest monsters.
“There’s a grandness to him. It’s sort of like Dracula,” Shaye explained. “It feels very otherworldly, bigger than life, but very rooted in reality.”
Now that the movie is actually out, Spruell has revealed a little more about the character. Cyrus was a cult leader who was killed and ended up in The Further, where he essentially continued being a cult leader among the dead, eventually bringing his supernatural followers back into the real world. Spruell also says director Jacob Chase wanted him to bring as much personality and creativity to Cyrus as possible, something relatively unusual for the entities inhabiting The Further.
And audiences certainly showed up to meet him.
