Well, this is unexpected.
Ridley Scott is promoting his new movie The Dog Stars, and naturally, the conversation has once again turned to Alien.
But buried in a new interview with the LA Times is a pretty gigantic update: Scott’s long-planned third Alien prequel is apparently back in the works.
The outlet notes that the film will pick up after Alien: Covenant with Michael Fassbender’s David creating a “brave new world for himself.”
Scott remains fascinated with David and the dangers of artificial intelligence.
“AIs can go off,” Scott told the outlet. “And if they do, it’s like a bomb.”
That’s particularly interesting considering where Alien: Covenant left us. The 2017 film ends with David secretly taking control of the Covenant, along with thousands of colonists and human embryos headed toward Origae-6.
Scott absolutely intended to continue that story.
Before Covenant was even released, Scott was already discussing another film, at one point referred to as Alien: Awakening. We reported here on Dread Central back in 2017 that Scott envisioned several additional movies eventually connecting his prequel saga to the original Alien.
But Covenant disappointed at the box office compared to Prometheus, and the planned continuation never materialized.
Instead, the franchise moved in another direction, most notably with Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus and Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth.
That’s what makes Scott’s new comments so surprising. Nearly a decade later, he’s apparently still working on the unfinished David storyline.
