Zach Cregger Says ‘The Flood’ Completes the Creative Cycle That Gave Us ‘Weapons’ and ‘Resident Evil’

After Barbarian exploded, Zach Cregger apparently went on one hell of a writing tear.

During last night’s Resident Evil Reddit AMA, Cregger revealed that Weapons, Resident Evil, and his upcoming The Flood were all written during the same “burst of activity,” essentially making them three pieces of the same creative period in his career.

“After Barbarian I wrote Weapons and Resident Evil and Flood in kind of a burst of activity,” Cregger explained through the official Sony Pictures account. “Those 3 movies were all ready to go, in fact there was a world I could have shot Flood first.”

He added that he was essentially waiting to see which project could get moving first.

“I had 3 movies and I was trying to get whichever one was ready to go. So they’re kind of like 3 peas in a pod to me. And when you see them all I think you’ll get the energy that I was dealing with at the time.”

That also helps explain Cregger’s previous comments about The Flood representing the end of a chapter in his career. It isn’t necessarily the end of Cregger making horror movies. It’s the final movie from that frantic post-Barbarian creative explosion.

And interestingly, it might be the least traditionally horror of the three.

“Flood is not quite as horror central as the other movies,” Cregger revealed, before adding that it “might be the most unsettling” and still contains horror moments and elements.

According to our sources, the sci-fi thriller is very Alien-esque, following a deep-space captain and her crew as they investigate a cryptic signal from a distant world. There, they discover an alien artifact capable of warping , eventually bringing them face-to-face with an incomprehensible intelligence.
