Now That ‘Buddy’ Is a Box Office Hit, Will We Get a Sequel?

I don’t think anyone knew exactly what was going to happen when Casper Kelly‘s wonderfully bizarre Buddy hit theaters last weekend.

Now we know people fucking love this thing.

As we reported here on Dread Central, Buddy blew past expectations with a $5.3 million opening weekend, more than double the roughly $2.5 million it was projected to make. The indie horror film opened on just 1,277 screens and is now expanding into additional theaters for its second weekend.

At this rate, Buddy should have a legitimate shot at crossing $10 million domestically, which would be a hell of an accomplishment for a modestly budgeted independent horror movie.

Which raises the obvious question: Are we getting more Buddy?

Nothing has been announced, but Kelly has spent the past few weeks making it pretty clear that he’d love to return to this world.

“Yeah, I would love to do that,” Kelly told The Direct when asked about continuing the story. “Part of writing it is you develop the underpinning, the rules, and the lore that doesn’t all get into the movie, because you want the movie to have mystery.”

That unrevealed lore could become particularly important if a sequel happens. Kelly told Nerdtropolis that he doesn’t want to simply explain everything away in another movie.

“I think I’m attracted to answering, if I do a sequel, I would answer some questions, but ask more and extend the mystery,” Kelly explained. “I don’t like movies that answer everything or tell you every little thing of the backstory.”

He also revealed that there were influences he wanted to bring into Buddy but couldn’t find room for, specifically mentioning and the wonderfully strange children’s television of Sid and Marty Krofft.
