Courteney Cox is open to taking her relationship with Ghostface behind the camera.
While attending TIFF, Cox was asked at the Deadline Studio whether she would consider directing a Scream sequel. Her response? She sounds pretty ready.
“I think I should, honestly. Nobody knows more about that movie than I do,” Cox told Deadline.
“I mean, and the creator, and Wes Craven, and the writers, and everybody who’s been in it,” she adds. “But I think it’d be great and fun and a good publicity thing. Get on it.”
Honestly, why not?
Cox has played Gale Weathers since the original film in 1996, giving her three decades of experience watching this franchise evolve. With Scream 8 still without an announced director, the timing certainly works. From what I’ve heard, meetings are happening as the team recalibrates for the next installment.
A quick refresher: Wes Craven turned the original Scream into a massive hit and directed all three sequels through 2011’s Scream 4. That film’s softer box office preceded an eleven-year gap before Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett revived the series with 2022’s Scream and followed it with Scream VI. The duo then moved on to Abigail and next The Mummy.
Original screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who penned Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, took the director’s chair for Scream 7. As we previously reported on Dread Central, he has said he won’t return to direct the eighth movie.
Cox’s comments express interest, rather than an actual attachment, but I’d love to see what she could bring to it. After thirty years of surviving these movies, giving her the chance to steer one sounds pretty wonderful.
