Holy hell, does Universal Pictures look like it has a monster on its hands.
Other Mommy opens exclusively in theaters October 9, and tickets are now on sale. Universal released a creepy new promo last night, followed by a brand-new full trailer this morning, both featuring Jessica Chastain (Mama, It Chapter Two) as a mother and the monstrous double tormenting her family.
I figured the promo would just be a shorter version of the full trailer. Nope. They feature different footage, and you’re going to want to watch both.
Frankly, I didn’t think this movie needed another full trailer. The first one was so potent that little tastes of new footage would have been more than enough to keep people talking until opening weekend.
That first look burrowed into my brain and stayed there for the rest of the day. I’d bet plenty of unsuspecting moviegoers left their screenings talking more about Other Mommy than whatever they’d actually bought a ticket to see.
But this new full trailer adds a particularly nasty wrinkle: Other Mommy apparently isn’t visible to everyone. She can be right there with Bela, then disappear before someone else sees her. Good luck convincing anybody there’s something wrong when the thing terrorizing you can simply vanish.
The trailer opens with Chastain in the bathtub with her daughter, sharing a playful moment that turns deeply uncomfortable when she covers her face with bubbles. Then Bela’s real mother walks in. When the little girl looks back, her bathing companion is gone.
It’s a great setup for another barrage of distorted movements, frightening appearances, and jump scares. Savage previously teased that the film contains around 50 of them, and the trailer certainly suggests he’s going to keep us busy. It ends with yet more absolutely terrifying footage of Chastain as Other Mommy.
