Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Crew Got a Wrap Gift Horror Fans Will Want

Forget a T-shirt. Zach Cregger sent his Resident Evil crew home with the entire movie in storyboard form.

During an interview with the New Flesh Horror Movie Podcast, the filmmaker showed off a book collecting the storyboards used to plan the film, revealing that copies were given to the crew as wrap gifts. Micah Brenner, one of the film’s storyboard artists, has also shared a few pages on social media.

“I boarded the whole movie,” Cregger explained while flipping through the book. “This is a wrap gift we gave to the crew, but this is the whole movie, right? So I did every single shot.”

That’s a pretty fucking cool souvenir. It’s also a look at how Cregger prepared Austin Abrams (Weapons) to react to creatures that sometimes weren’t there at all.

Creature and sequence spoilers for Resident Evil follow.

Showing a creature design during the interview, Cregger explained that Abrams had seen what he would be confronting before filming began.

“He knows what he’s looking at,” he said.

That preparation came in handy for moments like the monster charging down an alley and hitting a fence. According to Cregger, there was nothing physically there for Abrams to react to, while an approaching tentacle was probably represented by a tennis ball.

But some of the movie’s nastiest creations were right there on set.

“For things like the dude in the sewer, that’s a puppet. That guy was really there,” Cregger revealed. “If you stood there and you looked with your naked eye, you saw exactly what’s on the camera. There’s no digital nothing.”
