A new ‘Whalefall’ clip has surface, previewing the father-son relationship at the heart of the film between Austin Abrams & Josh Brolin.
Whalefall is one of the best novels I’ve read in the last few years. So yes, I’m excited to see the film adaptation swimming into theaters this October. Today, we have a new clip that previews the father-son relationship between the two main characters. Spoiler: it’s not a very good one.
In the clip, star Austin Abrams (Resident Evil) learns about sperm whales from his father, played by Josh Brolin (Dune). In just under a minute, we get a clear sense of how condescending Brolin’s character is to his son. That relationship plays a massive role in the novel. This clip gives us a small taste of what’s to come.
Based on Daniel Kraus’ novel, Whalefall stars Austin Abrams (Weapons, Resident Evil) as Jay Gardiner, a young man who dives off California’s central coast to search for his late father’s remains. Instead, he’s swallowed by a massive sperm whale.
Trapped inside the animal with only an hour of oxygen remaining, Jay must draw on the lessons his father (Brolin) taught him to find a way out.
Brian Duffield directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Kraus. The cast also includes Elisabeth Shue (Piranha 3D), John Ortiz (American Fiction), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), and Emily Rudd (Fear Street).
PG-13 rating for “peril, violent content, bloody images, some strong language, and thematic content.”
