With production already underway on Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, the one question that’s still been hanging in the air is whether or not Jennifer Love Hewitt will be returning to the franchise. Freddie Prinze Jr. has already been confirmed to reprise his role from the original movies, but Love Hewitt’s role in the movie has been uncertain.

This morning, however, Jennifer Love Hewitt officially confirmed her involvement in a post to Instagram. She writes, “It’s never too late to go back. Julie James is returning.”

The actress adds, “I know what you will be doing next summer!”

The ’90s slasher franchise will return to theaters on July 18, 2025.

Plot details haven’t been revealed as of yet, but the original film follows four young friends who are separated by a tragic accident but reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town. Stay tuned for more on the sequel.

Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq WithersJonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette will be among the fresh faces joining the franchise’s legacy cast members.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is set to direct the new installment in the franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) writing the original draft of the screenplay.

Jim Gillespie directed the original 1997 slasher, I Know What You Did Last Summer, which was written by Kevin Williamson (Scream) and based on Lois Duncan’s novel. The film spawned sequels in 1998 and later in 2006. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. only came back for that first sequel, so the new movie will mark their return to the saga after 27 years.
