‘Ebenezer’ Trailer: Ti West and Johnny Depp Wish You a Scary Christmas

Ti West is getting an early start on Christmas with the second trailer for Ebenezer, his new take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Johnny Depp (Sleepy Hollow) plays Ebenezer Scrooge, with Paramount Pictures bringing the film exclusively to theaters November 13, 2026.

Regular readers probably know I’m a huge fan of Ti. I became friends with him back when he made The Roost, played an integral part in him landing the Cabin Fever 2 gig at Lionsgate, and eventually worked with him on V/H/S. Watching him grow beyond those early independent and mumblecore circles and show what he could do has been wonderful, especially with throwbacks like The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers.

Now he’s making a pretty huge swerve with Scrooge.

We’ve barely started October, and we’re already getting ready for Christmas, right alongside Target and every other store putting out decorations. I guess it’s never too early to get excited about a Christmas horror movie.

Scrooged is one of my favorite holiday movies of all time. I revisit it constantly. It’s incredibly scary and funny, and Ebenezer looks to me like it could carry some of that same spirit. Depp looks like he’s having a lot of fun playing this miserable man, and I’m curious to see how far Ti pushes the horror of the story.

Because underneath all those familiar Christmas trappings, this is a ghost story about a wealthy man being forced to confront what his life – and his treatment of other people – actually amounts to. The spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come offer Scrooge a chance to recognize the damage he’s done and change before it’s too late.

That divide between rich and poor feels painfully current to me, especially as the middle class keeps getting squeezed. Dickens gave the story that anger long before any of us were here, but it’s hardly lost its relevance.
