Metallica summoned Cthulhu at the Sphere in Las Vegas last night, and you’ve got to fucking see this.
The band and fans have been sharing footage from the opening of Metallica’s Life Burns Faster residency, including a spectacular performance of “The Call of Ktulu” accompanied by a towering Cthulhu. Sphere’s enormous screen wraps above and around the audience, giving the sprawling instrumental a monster on a scale worthy of the song.
If the band’s IMAX 3D concert film Metallica Through the Never wasn’t enough, this puts the audience inside the spectacle. It’s nothing short of spectacular.
Originally released on Ride the Lightning in 1984, “The Call of Ktulu” also carries a songwriting credit for Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, alongside James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Cliff Burton… a connection to Mustaine’s early days in Metallica.
The residency runs on select dates through March 13, 2027, with no songs repeated between each weekend’s Thursday and Saturday performances.
