Campbell remembers the perception changing almost immediately. He pointed to Los Angeles Times critic Kevin Thomas, who called The Evil Dead an “instant classic.”
“And I’m like, ‘Wow, how fast was that change in perception?’” Campbell said. “So thank you, Dr. King.”
The financial results were extraordinary for something so small. On a reported $375,000 production budget, The Evil Dead took in approximately $29.4 million worldwide at the box office.
From there came Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, the 2013 Evil Dead, the television series Ash vs Evil Dead, Evil Dead Rise, and Evil Dead Burn. The franchise continues with Francis Galluppi’s Evil Dead Wrath, which is scheduled to arrive on April 7, 2028.
All these years later, we’re still getting new Evil Dead movies. It’s worth remembering that King saw something in the original when the filmmakers badly needed somebody to believe in it—and put his name behind it.
