Crystal Lake premieres next week, and the cast and crew are making the rounds ahead of our return to Camp Blood. Among the details coming out of Entertainment Weekly’s coverage today: Jason Voorhees won’t wear his iconic hockey mask in the first season.
Nor should he.
Longtime Friday the 13th fans already know why, but not everyone has seen everything. Hopefully, Crystal Lake sends a whole new generation back through the movies, where they’ll discover that Jason took a little time to settle on his signature look.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Brad Caleb Kane teases another familiar disguise.
“There is a mask. It might be a different mask than fans are used to, but it will not be a different mask than fans have seen.”
We’ve already pointed it out in the trailer: what appears to be Jason running through the woods with a sack over his head. So this isn’t necessarily some elaborate new mask reveal. We’re talking about the bag.
For anyone catching up, Crystal Lake sets the table for the original Friday the 13th, where Pamela Voorhees is the killer. Jason takes over in Friday the 13th Part 2, running around with a bag over his head. He doesn’t get the iconic hockey mask until Friday the 13th Part III. So, no, we shouldn’t be expecting that mask here.
That’s why putting him in the hockey mask this early would make no sense if we’re following that progression. There’s already a perfectly creepy look sitting right there in the franchise’s history.
But Crystal Lake also wants to explain it.
