Skeet Ulrich ranks all of the ‘Scream’ films [putting ‘Scream 7’ last, shocker] & says “without Sam Carpenter, there’s no Billy Loomis.” https://t.co/VM8ucL6fyk
As we previously reported, Barrera hasn’t completely ruled out playing Sam again. Her condition is that Spyglass would have to be out of the picture. She said she wouldn’t return to work with the company even if it apologized, but would consider coming back if the franchise changed hands.
That leaves a return unlikely under the current ownership, rather than something we can definitively say will never happen.
The same Us Weekly interview also touches on Matthew Lillard’s return as Stu in Scream 7. Ulrich was excited for his friend and supports Lillard’s theory that Stu could have survived the original film. He’s much less convinced that Billy could have survived being shot in the head.
Personally, I loved seeing Ulrich return, and it was wonderful to see Lillard again. These characters meant a lot to us growing up. But I also want us to stop being so locked into the legacy characters that every new movie has to find another way to bring them back.
Sam’s story at least gave Billy a reason to be there. His presence was part of a new character’s struggle, and it’s frustrating that we never got to see where that was supposed to go.
If that story is over, I’d rather see Scream move forward and start something new. Give us characters we can fall in love with now, instead of spending every sequel figuring out who might have survived the last 30 years. What say you?
