Ringu is one of my favorite horror films of all time. It helped inform an entire decade of horror, and you can still see its influence everywhere. Just look at the imagery in Other Mommy. Those Ring and Grudge vibes are all over it.
And as much as I love both Ringu and its American remake, The Ring, there still aren’t enough collectibles celebrating Sadako – or her American counterpart, Samara – for my liking. Every time something this cool comes along, I want it.
This little version of the long-haired nightmare comes with interchangeable parts that let you recreate several of her most recognizable looks. You can have her hair covering her face, expose that one terrifying eye, or use the hair piece that falls toward the ground as she crawls.
There’s also a well, a VHS tape, and a background sheet for displaying her crawling out of a television. Two face plates give you a choice between a grin and a vicious expression.
But the best is Sadako holding that tiny VHS tape. I mean, how perfect.
Without Ringu, I don’t think there would be a V/H/S as we know it, let alone V/H/S: Mixtape coming out this weekend. That movie’s connection between videotape and terror has stayed with me, and seeing it reduced to this adorable little accessory makes me want the figure even more.
