Aunt Gladys has a release date, but she’s still waiting on a director.
Tucked into Deadline’s latest report about Warner Bros.’ upcoming projects is a small update on Gladys, New Line’s prequel to Weapons: the film is awaiting a final draft before attaching a director.
The prequel remains scheduled for September 8, 2028.
As we reported last month, Zach Cregger won’t be directing, and he clarified that Zach Shields (Krampus, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) is handling the screenplay after the pair developed the story together. Cregger remains attached as a producer alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon.
The film will explore the history of Aunt Gladys, the character played by Amy Madigan in Weapons. Cregger previously explained that keeping her past mysterious served the original movie, but he believes there’s plenty left to tell.
“There’s an amazing story to be told about where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as,” he said at San Diego Comic-Con, teasing more twists, mysteries, and craziness.
For now, the next step is getting that script finished and finding the filmmaker who’ll bring Aunt Gladys back to the screen.
