We just heard about Guillermo del Toro’s disastrous BioShock movie talks. Thankfully, the director currently trying to bring Rapture to the screen sounds considerably more optimistic.
Francis Lawrence (Constantine, I Am Legend) has shared a fresh update on Netflix’s long-awaited adaptation, telling GamesRadar+ that work on the screenplay is moving forward.
“We’re still working on a script and I think we’re pretty close, and I’m feeling really good about it,” Lawrence said during press for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
“Yeah, I would love to make it,” he added. “I’ve been like dying to. I’ve been working at it. I’ve been trying.”
That’s encouraging, although it also means we’re still waiting for the film to get beyond the writing stage.
Netflix announced its BioShock adaptation back in 2022, partnering with 2K and Take-Two Interactive, with Lawrence subsequently signing on to direct.
The original game follows a plane-crash survivor into Rapture, an underwater city whose grand ambitions have collapsed into a nightmare of genetic experimentation and violence. It’s an incredible setting for a horror movie, which makes the years of waiting all the more frustrating.
For now, Lawrence still wants to make it, and he likes where the script is heading. Hopefully the next update gets us a little closer to actually visiting Rapture.
