‘M3GAN,’ ‘Happy Death Day,’ and ‘The Purge’ Are Getting Comics From IDW Dark

Blumhouse is bringing three of its horror franchises to comic shelves.

Announced out of New York Comic Con, a new partnership with IDW Publishing will bring The Purge, Happy Death Day, and M3GAN to IDW Dark, Entertainment Weekly reports. The imprint has already been exploring movie horror through titles including A Quiet Place and Smile.

The Purge kicks off the partnership, with Dan Watters (Batman: Dark Patterns) writing and Juan José Ryp (Wolverine: Blood Hunt) handling the artwork. Rather than revisiting the films’ characters, the comic will explore another corner of the world where all crime is legal for one night a year.

“What we’re doing is an entirely new place and a new town, new environment than we’ve gotten to see explored in the Purge universe so far,” IDW’s Heather Antos tells EW.

Happy Death Day has Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash) attached to write, and there’s an interesting detail for those of us still hoping for a third movie: Antos has heard Christopher Landon’s plan for it.

“He got to tell me exactly what his plan is for Happy Death Day 3, should they ever get to do it,” she says.

The idea is to explore potential connections without interfering with a future film. That doesn’t mean the comic is replacing the sequel, but it’s encouraging that those conversations are part of its development.
