As for the crossover itself, this pairing makes a whole lot of sense. Diablo began in 1996, sending players beneath Tristram Cathedral to battle the Lord of Terror. Its world of Sanctuary has been caught in the conflict between Heaven and Hell ever since.
Spawn debuted through Image Comics in 1992. The murdered Al Simmons makes a deal to return to his wife and comes back as a Hellspawn, becoming entangled in another war between Heaven, Hell, and humanity. Put him in a world crawling with demons, and he’s hardly going to feel out of place.
McFarlane made essentially that point when Christian McKnight spoke with him and Diablo Immortal associate art director Emil Salim for Dread Central’s crossover interview.
“So it wasn’t like I was trying to wedge him into the world of Shrek or something like that. It was hell on hell.”
The in-game event is running now through November 1, bringing Spawn-inspired powers, cosmetics, and rewards to Diablo Immortal, along with a confrontation with Malebolgia himself.
