James Gunn has more planned for Clayface, and he’s already excited about where the character is going after his upcoming horror movie.
Speaking to Cinemex on the film’s red carpet, Gunn confirmed that the shapeshifting Batman villain will return in the DCU.
“I think one of the most fun things about creating the DCU is being able to tell stories that are very, very different from one another, in very different genres, and yet they all come together at certain points,” Gunn said.
“And yeah, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Clayface. And I can’t wait for you guys to see what we do with him.”
That’s a pretty big statement, especially with that enthusiasm behind it. He’s telling us we will see Clayface again, and he clearly has something planned. We don’t know what project he’s referring to, but this goes well beyond leaving the door open for a possible return.
There was a lot of uncertainty around Gunn’s future just a few months ago, especially after Supergirl underperformed and people were arguing over whether Superman had done enough.
I’ve said this several times on social media: I think Superman did exactly what it was supposed to do. Superman isn’t James Bond when it comes to international box office. His audience is much more domestic, and expecting him to suddenly perform like a massive overseas franchise never made much sense to me.
My guess is that the internal expectations were lower than the internet’s. They’re building a universe. That takes time. You don’t immediately get a massive DCU by putting out one or two movies. It’s a slow climb, and Superman gave them somewhere to start.
With the Paramount–Warner Bros. merger now complete and Gunn and Peter Safran staying in place, things look a lot different. Lanterns was a success on HBO, another Superman movie is on the way, and Clayface arrives next week. The doom and gloom looks increasingly premature. Gunn is moving forward.
