While we wait for more concrete news on the project, Peter Safran has confirmed that James Mangold’s ‘Swamp Thing’ is still happening.
We’ve been wondering for a while now when we’d finally hear more about James Mangold‘s (Logan) Swamp Thing movie for DC Studios. Now, we finally have some news.
While speaking with Deadline at the Clayface premiere, producer Peter Safran was asked about Swamp Thing, to which he replied, “We’re working on it…The script is being written as we speak. But it’s something we’re excited about. All these things take time. When you’ve already got a filmmaker involved, you’ve got to wait for their window as well.”
Cue the sigh of relief amongst Swamp Thing fans everywhere.
I’m among those itching for a new iteration of the iconic DC Comics character. Wes Craven first took a crack at him back in 1982 with his Swamp Thing. That was followed by Jim Wynorski’s high-camp sequel in 1989. Both are fun, but I wouldn’t call either any sort of masterpiece.
The most well-received take remains the 2019 TV series starring Derek Mears (pictured above) as the titular scientist-turned swamp creature. Despite excellent critical and fan reception, it only ran for one season. Further proof that we can’t have nice things sometimes.
With James Gunn steering the ship at DC and a talented director like Mangold on board, Swamp Thing has every chance of being the highly entertaining, horror-driven movie we hope we’re getting. For now, it’s happening. We can at least be thankful for that.
We’ll just have to wait a bit longer than any of us would like to.
