Ahead of next summer’s release of sequel 28 Years Later, the messy rights issues attached to 28 Days Later have been worked out, bringing the 2002 film back to Digital at home.
Beginning today, you can buy or rent 28 Days Later on Digital outlets! Over on Amazon Prime Video, for example, you can rent the film for $3.99 or purchase the film for $14.99.
You can also rent or purchase sequel 28 Weeks Later for the same cost.
Physical media copies of 28 Days Later have been out-of-print for some time now, and the 2002 infection horror movie has also been unavailable to digitally stream in any capacity.
Why was the film unavailable for so long? Wikipedia explains, “By November 2022, 28 Days Later had become unavailable on Disney-owned streaming services including its removal from Disney+ Star internationally, hinting that Disney had lost rights to it; only its sequel, 28 Weeks Later (still owned by Disney), was available on streaming sites.”
The film’s Wikipedia entry continues, “In February 2024, it was revealed that producer Andrew MacDonald had bought back the rights to the film from Searchlight Pictures, promptly selling it to Sony Pictures via Columbia Pictures along with the upcoming sequel 28 Years Later.”

Waking from a coma in a deserted London hospital, bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) takes to the deserted city streets in a state of mystified confusion. Joining forces with another group of survivors following a terrifying encounter in a seemingly abandoned church, Jim soon learns the truth behind the deserted streets and the menacing creatures that lurk in the shadows.
Luiz H.C. celebrated two decades of 28 Days Later here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2022. He wrote in his anniversary retrospective piece, “I believe that 28 Days Later is the absolute best zombie flick since Romero’s original Dead trilogy. Not only is it still a memorable scare-fest, but its human elements have aged like a fine wine over the years.”
28 Years Later will be unleashed in theaters on June 20, 2025 from Sony.
