Batman’s villains aren’t always bringing the whole family to the theater.
Clayface has received an 18 certificate in the UK, with the British Board of Film Classification citing “strong bloody violence, injury detail.” The classification means nobody under 18 will be admitted to UK cinema screenings.
We already knew DC was getting bloody with this one. As we previously reported, the MPA gave the film an R rating for “strong bloody violence, gore, language, some nudity and brief drug use.”
Between the melting flesh and grotesque transformations in the trailers, Clayface certainly hasn’t been hiding what kind of movie it wants to be. A full horror film about one of Batman’s greatest villains? That remains one hell of a way to expand the DC Universe.
The BBFC listing also confirms a runtime of 108 minutes and 20 seconds. Plenty of time for Matt Hagen to have a very bad day.
Tom Rhys Harries stars as Hagen, an actor whose rise to stardom ends when a crime boss leaves him disfigured. An experimental treatment restores his appearance but begins affecting his grip on reality, sending him toward transformation and revenge.
James Watkins (Eden Lake, Speak No Evil) directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, based on Flanagan’s story. Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice), Max Minghella (Spiral: From the Book of Saw), and Eddie Marsan (The World’s End) also star.
Clayface opens in theaters October 23. Leave the kids at home.
