Brad Caleb Kane already knows where he wants to take Crystal Lake next. Whether he gets that opportunity is another question, but he designed the first season to work as a complete story if Peacock decides to stop here.
Speaking with Daniel Kurland for Dread Central, the showrunner explained how he balanced giving viewers an ending with leaving room for more Jason Voorhees.
Spoilers follow for Crystal Lake, now streaming in full on Peacock.
“I designed this so that if nobody watches and Peacock decides to not make a second season then it will at least feel like a satisfying whole,” Kane tells us. “At the same time, I know where season two goes. There are more stories to tell in Crystal Lake.”
And with the origin story established, there’s a killer loose in a town with plenty of potential victims.
“We now know that Sackhead Jason is out in the world. Pam knows. I’m sure people in the town know. There are places to go and expand upon the town in sort of a Twin Peaks David Lynch style.”
Kane sees an opportunity to spend more time with the people living around the infamous campground, including characters the movies never had much time to explore.
“These are great peripheral characters that are not really fully explored in the movies that we get the chance to explore more here, but can explore even further,” he explains. “I mean, come on. It’s Jersey in the mid-‘70s. There was a lot going on then and I’d like to bring some of it to Crystal Lake and see how Jason dispatches those people.”
This isn’t just a vague idea for another season, either.
“I’ve thought extensively on it. I know exactly what my diving off point for season two would be. And I have the general contours of a season. People just have to watch the first one and then maybe we’ll get the opportunity.”
