If you’re looking for someone who knows how to make a sequel, James Cameron is a pretty great place to start.
Godzilla Minus Zero director, writer, and VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki tells Empire that Aliens and Terminator 2 helped inform his approach to following up Godzilla Minus One.
“I’m going to have to give credit to James Cameron,” Yamazaki explains. “He looks at the original and finds another interesting hook point and digs much deeper. Oftentimes his sequels will take a slightly different angle, but still rooted in a lot of what was built in the first film. I was curious how his second films are outperforming the originals in a lot of ways.”
Both are pretty much the gold standard for expanding a story while giving audiences something different. That’s a hell of a bar to aim for.
Our own Rory Doherty gave Godzilla Minus Zero 3 out of 5 in his review, praising action that is “just as remarkable as its predecessor” while finding the character drama and pacing less successful.
