‘Halloween III’ Fans Need to Watch Jason Eisener’s ‘Project Shamrock’ Immediately

Out of all the Halloween things released this October, Project Shamrock is the best. Hands down, this is the one thing you have to watch before Halloween.

Jason Eisener, the filmmaker behind Hobo with a Shotgun, our V/H/S/2 segment “Slumber Party Alien Abduction”, and Kids vs. Aliens, has released a Halloween fan film that serves as an unofficial prequel to Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Which, by the way, is one of the best films in the entire franchise. Fight me.

Shot on 8mm and 16mm film and set in the 1960s, Project Shamrock looks phenomenal. The production quality is incredibly high, and the presentation makes it feel like something you weren’t supposed to find. This has instantly become a must-watch every Halloween season for me, especially right before revisiting Season of the Witch.

What’s really cool is how Eisener connects that film to the Michael Myers side of the franchise. Season of the Witch has always been the outlier, telling its own story outside Michael’s world. This short imagines a connection, and I’d recommend watching it before reading how he pulls it off.

The short follows a janitor who worked at the Silver Shamrock factory as he’s questioned about what he witnessed and his faith in the company. Through his account, we learn that Silver Shamrock’s experiments began long before the events of Season of the Witch, with several earlier test subjects.

One of them was Michael Myers.

We see the mask being created, we see it handed to him, and we see the result of Michael wearing it. Suddenly, what we’re watching feels like an epidemic of sorts, with Michael connected to something much bigger. And when you start questioning why a company would do any of this, Eisener brings in the Cult of Thorn in the final minute, tying these pieces together into one surprisingly cohesive mythology.
