William Eubank has shared an unused shot from Underwater that adds a much more intimate moment to the film’s explosive ending. Unfortunately, it also comes with some disappointing news for anyone hoping to see his director’s cut.
Eubank revealed previously unseen footage of Kristen Stewart as Norah sharing a sunlit moment with a man who appears to be her late fiancé, Sam.
“Figured I’d share this, since there will probably never be a director’s cut of Underwater,” Eubank wrote. “When Norah pulls that trigger and the place blows…the second to last shot was this moment when time slowed… Norah’s choice… 💙”
If you haven’t revisited the 2020 film in a while, Norah stays behind so Emily and Smith can escape, ultimately triggering the station’s reactor to destroy the creatures pursuing them. Earlier, she reveals to Emily how much she’d give for another moment with the fiancé she lost.
That makes this footage particularly significant as it appears to give Norah that moment as she makes her sacrifice. Whether read as a memory or an imagined reunion, it adds an emotional beat without necessarily changing her fate.
Underwater Fans 🦑… Spoiler Alert 🚨 Figured I’d share this, since there will probably never be a director’s cut of Underwater. When Norah pulls that trigger and the place blows…the second to last shot was this moment when time slowed… Norah’s choice… 💙 https://t.co/6L27IKn8dH

Eubank also explained how they captured the shot, and it was a surprisingly small production.
“We shot this as a pickup on the Fox lot by a fountain and used a mirror to push the sun into the water behind them. Shot it on my little Sony camera,” he wrote.
“Prob literally one of the last things made by 20th Century Fox before Disney came in. Small moment but such a beautiful one imo.”
This shouldn’t be confused with the separate alternate ending included among the film’s digital extras. Here, Eubank specifically places the moment alongside Norah’s decision to trigger the explosion.
