Curry Barker and Inde Navarrette revealed two easily missed details from Obsession in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, and both are pretty shocking. One involves what Nikki has been collecting. The other reveals where she was when she took a certain photograph… and it’s creepy as fuck.
Speaking on EW’s The Awardist, Navarrette pointed viewers toward the altar near the end of the movie.
“Bear’s hair’s on the altar at the end. She keeps cutting it,” she explained.
Look closely around the broken wish stick, and you’ll find hair belonging to Bear, played by Michael Johnston, along with the lunchbox and photographs. Navarrette credited the props team for assembling all those details.
Barker then brought up the scene where Bear opens his lunchbox at work and finds two photographs, labeled “You” and “Not Me.” The angle of the “You” photo reveals something that might not register while you’re watching.
“If you look at the picture, Nikki took the picture from the ceiling,” Barker said. “It’s a downward perspective.”
EW’s interviewer had assumed Nikki was in bed when she took it, but Barker explained that the angle makes that impossible. She was above him, on the ceiling, taking his picture!
That’s creepy enough on its own, but the conversation also revealed a deleted scene connected to Nikki’s whereabouts. They recalled Bear searching for her and Nikki insisting she had been in the room… even though he had just looked there.
The exchange ends with a tease that it will be “in some cut one day.”
As we reported earlier this morning, Barker would love to release an extended cut of Obsession with roughly 20 additional minutes, although he considers the theatrical version his director’s cut. Could this deleted scene make its way into that longer version? Who knows? Nothing’s been announced, but this gives us another reason to want to see that extra footage.
