Chelsea Frei wants you to “Get Off Your Phone’ in upcoming influencer horror-comedy that she directs and stars in.
Are you as sick of influencer horror as I am? Well, too bad, because there’s another on the way. At least this one’s a comedy.
Chelsea Frei (pictured above in The Paper) is set to star in and direct the influencer horror-comedy Get Off Your Phone, reports Deadline. The film marks Frei’s feature directorial debut.
Here’s the synopsis: “The film follows Daniela (Frei), a canceled influencer who retreats to rural Wisconsin with her boyfriend, Jackson, in hopes of disconnecting from the digital world. But when a mysterious stranger, Rada, enters their lives, their attempt to unplug takes an unsettling turn.”
Maria Bakalova (The Apprentice) and Jon Rudnitsky (Saturday Night Live) also star.
Phiphen Pictures, Framehound, and Doom and Gloom are producing, with Molly Conners, Amanda Bowers, Andi Matichak, Emma Thorne, Gillian Williams, and Frei on as producers.
Said Frei, “I started writing Get Off Your Phone during the pandemic, when my screen time had reached truly alarming levels. I think we’re all a little addicted to our phones, and I wanted to take that obsession to the extreme. I’m so grateful to Framehound and Phiphen for believing in this story and helping me make it a reality.”
I couldn’t agree more with Frei here. Personally, I’ve taken a big step back from my screen time and learned to touch grass again. I promise you, it’s the way to go.
This is also what has me curious about Get Off Your Phone. While most influencer horror movies (Influencer, Sissy) look at the dangers of influencers, this film seems more focused on the damage all that screen time does to us, but with a comedic bent. That certainly separates it from others we’ve seen to this point.
Production on Get Off Your Phone just wrapped. Stay tuned to Dread for a release date.
