Zach Cregger has ideas for where Resident Evil could go next, and he wants to stay involved even if another filmmaker takes over behind the camera.
Yesterday, we reported on his frustration with the conversation surrounding his movie. But there was another little nugget in that interview worth talking about.
On The Town, Matthew Belloni asked, “If there were five Resident Evil movies that you just produced but didn’t write or direct, would you be okay with that, or not?”
“I would want to have some hand in them,” Cregger answered. “I can’t help but have an idea for where that franchise — I’m calling it a franchise — could go. So, certainly.”
That sounds encouraging if you’re a fan of what Cregger did with Resident Evil and want his fingerprints on whatever comes next. He’s already taking a similar approach with Gladys, the Weapons prequel he helped develop with Zach Shields and remains attached to produce, while leaving the directing to someone else.
His wording also gets at something we’ve been wondering: Would another Resident Evil continue this story, or send us into a completely separate nightmare? Back in September, he told The Playlist that he “can’t help thinking about other places this story could go.”
We can read into that all we want, but it certainly sounds like he sees somewhere to take what he started. That doesn’t confirm a direct continuation or a deal for his involvement. It does tell us he isn’t ready to wash his hands of it.
