Netflix has officially unveiled its long-rumored live-action Stranger Things spinoff, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, with a new teaser trailer.
Co-created by Kate Trefry and The Duffer Brothers, and directed by Joe Wright, the series will take audiences back to the 1950s, predating both the original series and the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, reports Deadline.
The prequel is set to premiere in 2028.
The teaser, which you can watch below, reveals that the story takes place in Marion, Nevada, on April 19, 1955. The footage shows an abandoned bicycle near a restricted area after dark, with the lights of the town glowing in the distance as a mysterious, wormhole-like phenomenon begins forming in the night sky.
The Duffers had a pretty good idea of what they wanted to leave behind when they first talked about the spinoff. “I think we’re done with the ’80s,” Ross Duffer told Deadline last November. Matt Duffer added, “Kids on bikes. Probably done with that.” Well, they got out of the ’80s. They still found room for a bike in the teaser.
Other Worlds follows new characters, but its Nevada setting ties into a mystery from Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Kate Trefry, who wrote the play, will serve as showrunner, with Joe Wright directing the first three episodes. Matt Duffer has said the prequel will explain the rock young Henry Creel found in a scientist’s briefcase in the Nevada caves. Even the teaser’s song points back to Henry. “Sh-Boom” by The Chords also plays in Season 5 when Max visits his memory of Hawkins High.
Other Worlds is the franchise’s first live-action TV spinoff and its third spinoff overall. Alongside the stage play, the animated Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 follows the Hawkins kids between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original series and has already released two seasons. Netflix also filmed performances of The First Shadow in February for a future screen release.
