The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced shortlists in twelve major categories for the 98th Academy Awards, including Casting, Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Sound and Visual Effects.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners have each been shortlisted in multiple categories, while Zach Cregger’s Weapons and Emilie Blichfeldt’s The Ugly Stepsister could end up competing for Academy Awards of their own next year.
For the sake of full clarity before we begin, a movie making the Oscars shortlist means that it’s on the list for *potentially* receiving an official nomination for an Academy Award, with these shortlist selections soon being whittled down to the final list of actual nominees. Nominations voting begins on January 12, 2026, and concludes on January 16, 2026.
