A new image from The Blood Countess shows Isabelle Huppert (Elle) draped in red as Elizabeth Báthory alongside Birgit Minichmayr (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) as her maid.
The eccentric vampire mystery will have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival next month.
In the film, after The Blood Countess awakens from her long beauty sleep and emerges from the underworld, she and her devoted maid (Birgit Minichmayr) embark on a baroque quest through Vienna to recover the red elixir of life.
The book, if found and read by their enemies, threatens their vampire realm. Hot on their heels are a vegetarian nephew, his psychotherapist, two vampirologists, a police inspector, and more lively characters.
Thomas Schubert (The Dark Valley), Lars Eidinger (Personal Shopper), André Jung (The Experiment), Karl Markovics (Unknown), and Eurovision Song Contest winner Conchita Wurst round out the cast.
The Austria-Luxembourg-Germany co-production is directed by Ulrike Ottinger from a script she co-wrote with Elfriede Jelinek (The Piano Teacher).
