Boycotters be damned, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass are celebrating a massive win with Scream 7, which ended up having an even better box office opening than expected.
Early weekend estimates have the film opening to a massive $64.1M, far surpassing the initial $40M projection, with the global take expected to top $80M, already putting the film in the black. There will be a Scream 8, a Scream 9, and a Scream 10.
THR notes: “The droves of moviegoers rushing to see the pic prove once again why many genre titles are generally review-proof. The pic — whose major coup was getting Neve Campbell to return after sitting out the last installment — currently sits at a series-worst 33 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the RT audience score is a good-enough 78 percent (studios generally want to see 80 percent and above). And it earned a B- CinemaScore; its predecessors likewise earned some variation of a B, which is a high grade for a horror title.”
Interestingly, the early films were critic-proof, and now the films have become fan-proof, underscoring the frustrating reality that IP always wins. The irony is that Paramount and Spyglass seem to think audiences showed up for Neve Campbell, when in reality, Ghostface is the brand.
Circling back to the near guaranteed sequels, it would be nice to see writer Kevin Williamson move away from legacy characters and give us something original with the Ghostface lore.
THR also added that Scream VI, which launched to $44.4 million in March 2023, initially held the series’ top opening record, not adjusted for inflation.
In the latest installment, when a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter (Isabel May) becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all.
