Gen Z Thrillers Are Here and This One’s Called ‘Crashout’

Welp, I’m old. New thrillers are officially being made for Gen Z, and at this point, I’m just here to figure out which app the killer is using.

Hot off the heels of Leviticus being picked up at Sundance, star Joe Bird has been cast alongside Catherine Laga’aia in Crashout, a Gen Z satirical thriller from Australian production banner Deadhouse Films, says Variety.

DREAD has learned that Crashout follows a group of new high school graduates whose celebratory road trip spirals into tragedy. When an accident leaves one of their friends dead, the three remaining teens – panicked and terrified of the consequences – decide to stage a found-footage film to rewrite the night and save their futures.

Rounding out the ensemble is Evelyn Sims (Moana) in a potential breakout role. 

Bird also previously appeared in A24’s horror breakout Talk to Me, which took in over $90 million at the worldwide box office, and most recently featured in Warwick Thornton’s colonial-era Western Wolfram, which bowed in competition at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Crashout is written and directed by Nick Annas and produced by Helen Tuck and Enzo Tedeschi at Deadhouse Films.

Executive producers are Deanne Weir of WeirAnderson Films, alongside Bobby Romia and Tianna Roberts of the newly formed Atypical Originals. Casting is by Stephanie Pringle and Alison Fowler at Chicken and Chips Casting.

Production is set to begin later this month.
