Breaking: Jamie Blanks, the Australian filmmaker and composer known for both Urban Legend and Valentine, has died unexpectedly at the age of 54, his family announced.
In a statement shared on X, his family said he “passed away suddenly at his home in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday 16 March,” calling his death “unexpected, despite some ill health in recent years.”
Even more disappointing is that this news “comes at a time when Jamie was preparing to direct another film.” The family adds: “He was still very active supporting other filmmakers and developing his own projects.”
Blanks made a major impact on the horror genre with two of the few strong late-’90s/early-’00s teen slashers, Urban Legend and Valentine. He also directed Storm Warning and Nature’s Grave, an excellent remake of Long Weekend.
Deadline writes: Born and raised in Melbourne, Blanks attended Swinburne Film School. After directing a string of shorts, his big break came in his mid ’90s on 1998 cult horror film Urban Legend for TriStar Pictures. The U.S. movie starred Jared Leto, Joshua Jackson and Alicia Witt and made $72M WW.
Here’s an interesting bit of news: According to interviews, Blanks has said that the path to directing Urban Legend began with him receiving screenplays for both Scream (after a manager saw his student film) and I Know What You Did Last Summer, despite his limited portfolio and young age. He wasn’t chosen for either, but the experience of getting close sparked him into action.
Blanks leaves behind a body of work that helped define a generation of horror, ensuring his influence on the genre will endure.
