Anastasia Elfman ascends the peak to spotlight the five best Charlize Theron genre performances in honor of Netflix’s ‘Apex.’
Grab the sunscreen and dust off those hiking boots, because we’re getting a new nightmare survival thriller! Apex stars Charlize Theron, trapped in a high-stakes predator vs. prey battle to the death, as a rock climbing adrenaline junkie cornered in the wilderness, hunted by a psychotic killer.
Director Baltasar Kormákur continues his focus on all-or-nothing, visceral “man-versus-nature” thrillers, echoing his work on Everest and Adrift. Teaming up with writer Jeremy Robbins (The Purge series) makes me feel like we’re all in for some wild, twisted, gory fun!
Apex co-stars Taron Egerton (Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), who leans into a maniacal insanity, making a game out of hunting Theron. Being a huge fan of eerie genre-straddling Agatha Christie-type British whodunits, I’ve enjoyed Egerton’s broad acting chops in Inspector Lewis and The Kingsman franchise, and expect nothing less from his new murderous role.
I’ll be the first to admit, Charlize Theron isn’t our typical Scream Queen, nor is her name synonymous with horror, but after reflecting on the major genre roles she’s conquered, she probably should be.
