It won’t be that long now before Zach Cregger‘s Resident Evil infects theaters. At the moment, fan speculation is…mixed. While I personally have loved the intensity of what I’ve seen from the trailers, some are concerned that the film veers too far away from the lore of the Capcom games. Well, in a new video that you can watch below, Cregger assures fans that he loves the games and is aiming to make an RE film we can all enjoy.
Said Cregger, “Resident Evil is kind of the flagship for survival horror. Horror — it’s not action. What I love about survival horror games, and Resident Evil mostly, is this overwhelming feeling of dread, where it’s like: I have to go down this long, dark passageway. I have two shotgun shells. I know there’s a lot of shit in there waiting for me, and it’s all really bad, but I have to go.”
“So I had this idea for a story in the world of Resident Evil, but it’s kind of like me — like if I was dropped into a Resident Evil game,” continues Cregger. “I’m terrible at guns. I wouldn’t know how any of them work. I would miss 99% of all my shots. God damn it.“
Adds the filmmaker, “I love the games. I’ve played the games for I don’t know how many thousands of hours — too many. This is an opportunity for me to be loyal to the games in spirit and in tone, and build a story that just puts you in that scenario again and again and again, with increasing stakes.“
Listen, I’m at the point where I don’t need to hear anymore. I’m sold. I fully believe Cregger is about to deliver the best Resident Evil film we’ve gotten (low bar, I know). But if his committment to recreating the experience of the games through a brand new story is anything to go by, I think fans can safely get behind the project and get excited for whatever terror is coming our way.
In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival, as one fateful, horrifying night collapses into chaos around him.
