Hot news this morning, as Deadline reports that Zac Efron (The Iron Claw) is set to star in and produce a series adaptation of the cult classic horror film, Angel Heart, for HBO and A24!
Based on William Hjortsberg‘s novel and released in 1987, the Alan Parker-directed film starred Mickey Rourke as an investigator in 1955 New Orleans who’s hired by a mysterious man played by Robert De Niro to track someone down, leading to Hellish revelations.
The series “will follow a down-and-out NYC paparazzi, who makes his living finding and photographing people who don’t want to be found, who is hired by a mysterious man to find a missing woman. But the deeper he digs to find her, the more it looks like a group of powerful elites, and maybe something supernatural, are covering up the disappearance.”
Efron will executive produce alongside Black Rabbit creator Zach Baylin, who is also writing the project.
Jonathan van Tulleke (“Shogun”) will direct.
Also executive producing are Kate Susman through Youngblood Pictures, Marc Toberoff, Max Hjortsberg, Lorca Hjortsberg, Alice P. Neuhauser, Joe Hipps for Cut To, Stuart Manashil, Kevin Turen and Harrison Kreiss.
There was a time when the Neighbors star wasn’t considered for horror whatsoever, seen mostly as a comedic actor. Credit to Efron for completely crushing that perception. Not only did he star in the astounding drama, The Iron Claw, but he’s also appeared in a few horror projects, including a leading role in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, where he proved how creepy he can be as Ted Bundy.
Baylin, meanwhile, has come on strong as a writer, having written Creed III, Gran Turismo, and The Order (we don’t have to talk about The Crow).
Stay tuned to Dread for more details as we learn them.
