Ari Aster revealed recently that he wrote a prequel to his debut horror hit, ‘Hereditary’, but the time hasn’t been right to make it just yet.
Ari Aster put himself on the map with his horror haunter, Hereditary. The terrifying film features an astounding performance from Toni Collette that had fans clamoring for her to get an Oscar win…or even just a nomination (she received neither, because of course). His debut feature also introduces some curious lore, much of which is only touched on in the film. Ripe for a prequel, you might say. Turns out, the filmmaker already wrote one.
Gold Derby reports that, during a screening of Hereditary here in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theater (amazing place), Aster revealed this exciting tidbit. “I wrote a prequel to this. It never feels like the right time. It’s a prequel, not a sequel, so I don’t know where this goes.”
No details on the plot there, but does it really matter? What matters is that Hereditary was hugely successful, raking in ten times its budget. The prequel exists. And I expect all it’s going to take for it to happen is for Aster to finally find the time to do it. When that will be, who knows. But the possibilities for where the story could go are endless…and all but guaranteed to get butts in seats.
The first Hereditary followed a grieving family who find themselves haunted by strange and increasingly frightening occurrences, leading to an ending you won’t soon forget.
After the film’s release in 2018 by A24, Aster went on to make Midsommar (another iconic horror movie), followed by Beau is Afraid and Eddington. At this point, I think fans would be more than excited to learn more about the roots of the horror at the center of Hereditary.
Here’s hoping that prequel doesn’t get stopped dead in its tracks by a street post and finds new life soon.
