It was announced back in February that, hot off his role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as Lobo, Jason Momoa would next star in the action-adventure Helldivers, a movie version of the popular video game.
Now, Deadline reports that Momoa is departing PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures’ film adaptation, which is still being directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious). The reason for his departure is unknown.
The project is still very much alive, and Sony is currently searching for a new star.
Although the plot hasn’t been confirmed, the shooter-style video game follows an elite unit of soldiers — known as Helldivers — who battle alien creatures that are threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth.
Sony Pictures and Playstation are backing the film, which is slated to release in theaters on November 10, 2027.
Helldivers was released in 2015 by Arrowhead Game Studios. A sequel, Helldivers 2, launched nearly a decade later in 2024. Producers on the Helldivers film include Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through his company Perfect Storm Entertainment.
