Watching Burn, it was clear to me that Buchanan understood the level of Deadite performances that had come before her and wanted to make her own mark. She does so in ways you’ll have to wait to see this weekend. Let’s just say, she practically owns the middle chunk of the movie.
As for Buchanan’s makeup, every Deadite has its own signature look. To look at hers, you’d think it would’ve been a difficult process, but the actress assures me it wasn’t so bad. “I think on the worst day, it was roughly three hours. But the more we did it, we knocked some time off.” Obviously, three hours is still a long time to sit in a chair. Yet that’s nothing compared to the horror stories I’ve heard of actors having makeup applied for six hours or more.

Buchanan seems to have delighted in the process, though, offering some details on one of the film’s more memorable images…the headrest stuck in her face. “The whole headrest was weeks and weeks of preparation. The rods were made out of paper straws that they sprayed with metallic paint… It was crazy. I had magnets stuck to my throat and whatnot. It was just fun to explore the process, and it turned out really great.“
It really did. And that same enthusiastic energy comes through in Buchanan’s performance, one that captures the giddy maliciousness of the Deadites wonderfully.
In the film, after the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites—turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell—she comes to discover that the vows she took in life live on… even in death.
Dune: Part Two actress Souheila Yacoub stars as Alice in Evil Dead Burn alongside Hunter Doohan (Wednesday), Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent), and Tandi Wright (Pearl), with Erroll Shand, Edgar Price, Maude Davey, Keanu Karim, and Victory Ndukwe.
Evil Dead Burn is now in theaters via Warner Bros.
