Marvel’s new Midnight Universe is already embracing its horror roots.
Among today’s newly revealed variant covers, one immediately stood out: artist Skan‘s (Skan Srisuwan) haunting Cover D for Midnight Spider-Man #1, which pays unmistakable homage to the iconic poster for David Cronenberg‘s The Fly.
The eerie artwork depicts a grotesque Spider-Man emerging from a glowing cocoon of webbing and twisted limbs, evoking the unforgettable imagery of Seth Brundle’s horrific transformation. It’s exactly the kind of body horror influence that feels right at home in Marvel’s new horror-focused publishing initiative.
According to Marvel, the cover is part of a brand-new ongoing variant program called Midnight Horror Homage Variants, a monthly Cover D line that will feature artwork inspired by classic horror imagery.
The new A-E variant program breaks down as follows:
- Cover A: Regular series cover with the Midnight trade dress.
- Cover B: Midnight Bloodbath Variants featuring blood-soaked imagery.
- Cover C: Midnight Special Variants spotlighting horror reimaginings of Marvel heroes.
- Cover D: Midnight Horror Homage Variants inspired by iconic horror artwork.
- Cover E: Midnight Gallery Variants featuring prestige painted artwork.
Marvel also revealed Clayton Crain’s three-part connecting variants spanning the launch titles.
