Netflix Unveils First Look at Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’

Ryan Murphy is bringing one of America’s most infamous true crime cases to Netflix next month, and our first look at Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is every bit as striking as fans hoped.

Courtesy of Vanity Fair, Netflix has debuted the official poster along with a batch of first-look images from the fourth season of Murphy’s hit Monster anthology series. The blood-soaked images tease a stylish retelling of the infamous 1892 axe murders that made Lizzie Borden one of the most enduring figures in true crime history.

Leading the cast is Ella Beatty, daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, as Lizzie Borden. She stars alongside Charlie Hunnam as Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden; Rebecca Hall as her stepmother, Abby; Billie Lourd as her sister, Emma; Jessica Barden as her close friend, Alice Russell; and Vicky Krieps as the Borden family’s maid, Bridget Sullivan. Sarah Paulson will also appear as notorious serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, executive producer Ian Brennan explained that the new season continues the central theme that has defined Monster from the beginning.

“It was a tough time to be a rudderless young woman, and in a house that didn’t seem happy. The big question the anthology always asks is are monsters made or born? With Lizzie, if she’s a monster, she wasn’t born that way.”

Hall offered her own description of Murphy’s latest true crime saga, joking:

“It’s Ryan Murphy does Cinderella.”

Following Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and the upcoming Monster: The Ed Gein Story, Murphy’s anthology now turns its attention to one of the most notorious murder cases in American history.
