We have our first look at Italian supernatural horror film ‘The Spiral’, teasing a family’s descent ahead of its premiere at TIFF.
Ahead of its premiere through TIFF’s Midnight Madness program, we have our first look at the trailer for Italian supernatural horror film The Spiral (aka L’estranea).
The film follows a woman who discovers her family’s past is built upon a horrifying supernatural bargain made decades earlier. As long-buried secrets begin resurfacing, she finds herself confronting forces that should have remained forgotten.
To watch the trailer, you wouldn’t know this was a horror film. It offers a look at a family’s rise from a neighborhood tailor shop to a prestigious fashion boutique, while hinting at the challenges that threaten their success. Though there isn’t much horror in the trailer, we swear it’s a genre movie. I actually kind of like that; instead of seeing overt terror, there’s a strange sense of something worse to come lingering just beneath the picturesque family’s smiles.
Paolo Strippoli (A Classic Horror Story, Flowing) directed the film.
As Dread’s Brad Miska noted in our TIFF coverage earlier this morning, Strippoli has already proven he knows how to craft unsettling horror, and everything we’ve heard suggests this one delivers another deeply atmospheric nightmare.
