Fans have long speculated who killed Tatum Riley in ‘Scream’. Stars Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich have an answer.
With most of the Scream films featuring more than one killer, part of the fun with revisits has always been trying to figure out who was in the Ghostface costume during each scene. One death sequence that fans have theorized for ages about is that of Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan) from the first film.
In the film, Tatum heads out to the garage during a party to get some beer. That leads to what would become the franchise’s iconic garage door death. But the question has always remained… who offed Tatum?
The Wrap reports that during a Scream reunion panel at Midsummer Scream this past weekend, stars Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich (who play killers Stu and Billy, respectively) offered an answer…though it won’t leave fans satisfied.
Said Ulrich, “To be honest, not even [screenwriter] Kevin Williamson knows who killed [Tatum]. And he wrote the damn thing. And we never discussed it. So, it’s really fan theory, which I think is great. But, I don’t know. No one knows.”
Lillard, however, teased that he may be responsible, adding a reason for Tatum’s death: “I always say it’s because she said ‘no’ to going to prom.”
“Who knows” isn’t the answer fans want. But I lean towards Lillard’s idea that it was his character Stu who ended Tatum’s chances of appearing in the sequel. Stu did seem like the type who would hold that deep of a grudge over something as stupid as prom.
His mom and dad would be so mad at him.
