Apple TV Boards Alfonso Cuarón’s Cult Horror Series ‘Ascension’

Apple TV has ordered Alfon’s Cuarón‘s (Gravity) cult horror series, Ascension, reports Variety.

Inspired by Adam Nevill‘s novel Last Days, the series follows Rose, “a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.”

Curiosity killed the cat, as they say.

Caitríona Balfe (pictured above in Outlander) will play Rose.

Cuarón co-wrote the series with his brother Carlos Cuarón as well as Natalie Erika James (Relic) and Christian White (Apartment 7A). All four will also executive produce. James and White will both serve as co-showrunners, with James on as lead director.

Esperanto Filmoj’s Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz will executive produce, alongside Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden for Anonymous Content. Balfe will also executive produce.

Of course, Cuarón is well-known as the director of the dystopian Children of Men (a film full of sequences I can’t shake). He also directed the Sandra Bullock film Gravity, which contains some incredibly haunting images of space.

Balfe, meanwhile, has appeared in films such as Ford v Ferrari and The Amateur, though she is best-known for her role as Claire in the series Outlander.

With Natalie Erika James and Christian White also on board, Ascension could get very interesting.
